The Inverness community and Scotland’s healthcare profession are mourning the tragic loss of Russell Mullen, a respected consultant breast surgeon at Raigmore Hospital, who died while hillwalking in Glencoe. He was 47.
Mr. Mullen set out on a trek across the Glencoe mountain range on Saturday, July 18, but failed to return home. After concerns were raised for his safety, Police Scotland and the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team launched a search centered on Sgùrr na h-Ulaidh. His body was later recovered from the mountain, and police confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
A devoted husband, father of two, and highly regarded surgeon, Russell dedicated his career to caring for breast cancer patients across the Highlands. Throughout his years of service at Raigmore Hospital, he earned a reputation for clinical excellence, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to providing the highest standard of care to every patient he treated.
His family described him as a loving husband and father whose greatest joy was spending time with those he loved. They also remembered him as a compassionate professional who approached his work with humility, empathy, and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on countless patients and colleagues.
NHS Highland paid tribute to Mr. Mullen as a “highly respected colleague,” extending its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and coworkers while offering support to staff affected by his sudden passing.
Following the heartbreaking news, former patients shared emotional tributes honoring the surgeon who had helped guide them through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Many credited him with changing—or even saving—their lives. One patient wrote that Mr. Mullen had given her ten years cancer-free, while another said his expert care allowed her the precious opportunity to watch her son grow up. Colleagues remembered him not only as an exceptional surgeon but also as a kind, humble, and supportive member of the medical team.
Outside the hospital, Russell was known for his love of the outdoors, particularly hillwalking, and for his deep devotion to his family. Friends say he balanced an accomplished medical career with genuine warmth, generosity, and compassion, qualities that endeared him to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of Russell Mullen’s life will be held on Friday, August 14, at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in his memory to Glencoe Mountain Rescue, whose volunteers assisted in the search efforts.
Although his passing has left an immeasurable void within his family, among his colleagues, and throughout the Highland community, Russell Mullen’s legacy of compassion, professionalism, and selfless service will continue to inspire generations of healthcare professionals and remain a source of comfort to the many lives he touched.
