Family, friends, and the Chesterland, Ohio, community are mourning the tragic loss of Robert “Rob” Russell, a devoted husband, loving father of four, and man of unwavering faith, who was fatally shot at a Put-in-Bay bar just hours before his 40th birthday.
Russell, 39, was killed shortly after midnight on Thursday inside Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille on Delaware Avenue. He had traveled to Put-in-Bay with his wife, Lindsay Russell, to celebrate his milestone birthday, which would have been the following day. Instead of marking the occasion together, the family was left grieving an unimaginable loss.
According to Rob’s sister, Christi Russell, he and Lindsay were enjoying a quiet evening when he left their table to use the restroom. Moments later, he was shot.
“There was no altercation,” Christi said. “He was simply enjoying a night out with his wife.”
Emergency responders arrived shortly after midnight and found Russell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have arrested Colton Smith, 21, of Brownstown, Michigan, in connection with the shooting. He has been charged with murder with a firearm specification, along with an additional misdemeanor offense. Investigators have said the victim and the suspect did not appear to know one another, and a motive has not yet been publicly disclosed. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to interview witnesses and indicating that additional charges remain possible.
Rob was far more than the victim of a tragic act of violence. He was a devoted family man whose life revolved around his wife and four children. His family spent summers on the Lake Erie islands, where they owned a modest houseboat docked at Midway Marina. Together they created lasting memories through fishing trips, family outings, and handyman work they often performed during their visits.
His three sons shared his love of fishing and wrestling, while his youngest child, a daughter, was, as his family described, “daddy’s little girl.” Christi said Rob treasured every moment with his children and loved raising them alongside his wife in a home grounded in faith and love.
At the time of the shooting, the couple’s two oldest sons were attending Camp Patmos on the islands, while their two youngest children were at sleepovers near the family’s Chesterland home.
In a heartfelt tribute, Lindsay remembered her husband as the foundation of their family.
“Rob was so much more than a husband and father,” she wrote. “He was a constant presence, a source of strength, a comforting hand, a helping hand, a perseverer, a man of unwavering faith and a father who intentionally led and loved his family and children toward Christ every single day. The void he leaves behind is immeasurable.”
She also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support the family has received through prayers, meals, messages, and acts of kindness. A fundraising campaign has been established to assist Lindsay and their children as they navigate the difficult road ahead.
Following the tragedy, Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille closed for the remainder of Thursday to allow employees time to process the devastating event and cooperate with investigators. Management later issued a statement extending condolences to Russell’s family and everyone affected by what they described as a “senseless act of violence.”
According to local records, the fatal shooting was Put-in-Bay’s first homicide since 2011 and only the second homicide recorded on the island.
